UK Government Quietly Removes Encryption Advice Amid Dispute with Apple
- Key Story: The UK government has discreetly removed encryption guidance from its official cybersecurity web pages, notably those of the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC).
- Role of the agency: Previously, the NCSC had advised legal professionals to use encryption tools, including Apple's Advanced Data Protection (ADP), to safeguard sensitive information.
- Key change: The original guidance document has been deleted and now redirects to a page that omits any mention of encryption or ADP, instead recommending Apple's Lockdown Mode, which offers a different form of security.
- Significance: This change follows the UK government's secret order for Apple to create a backdoor to access users' encrypted iCloud data, leading Apple to withdraw its ADP feature from the UK market.
- Legal Troubles: Apple is currently challenging this data access order in the UK's Investigatory Powers Tribunal, highlighting the ongoing tension between user privacy and governmental access.
- Concerns: The removal of encryption advice raises concerns among privacy advocates about the UK government's commitment to digital security and the potential implications for individuals handling sensitive information.
